Custom Spur Gear Manufacturing for Marine Grab Buckets

A shipyard client needed twelve spur gears for grab bucket drives that run in salt spray, close on rock, and take a shock load on every cycle. Each gear was cut from ZG310-570 cast steel, normalized to relieve casting stress, then high-frequency quenched on the tooth flanks only — hard surface, tough core. Modules M10, M14 and M25 cover grab buckets from small clamshell units up to heavy dredger cranes, all held to DIN 8 and supplied with material MTC and UT reports on request. The reasoning is straightforward: straight teeth spread impact across the full face width and generate no axial thrust, which is what a low-speed grab winch actually needs.

Reliability is non-negotiable in maritime operations. Rooted in Heavy Duty Gear Manufacturing, we recently completed a precision engineering project for a major shipyard, delivering high-performance Marine Grab Bucket Gear. These components are engineered to withstand extreme torque and abrasive marine environments.

Why Choose Our Marine Gear Solutions?
Heavy-Duty Performance: Utilizing ZG310-570 material combined with high-frequency quenching, our gears offer superior durability and impact resistance for heavy-duty grab systems.
Precision Engineering: Our advanced gear hobbing process ensures each tooth meets strict DIN 8 standards, optimizing the lifespan of the machinery.
Customization Expertise: From M10 to M25 modules, we specialize in large-scale gear manufacturing tailored to specific shipyard requirements.

Our custom spur gear is widely applied in conveyors, general machinery and low-speed drive systems. Compared to helical gear, spur gear offers simpler manufacturing, no axial thrust and higher transmission efficiency, yet it generates more noise at high speeds. Compared to worm gear, spur gear achieves better power efficiency but cannot provide a large single-stage reduction ratio. We provide spur gears with material MTC and UT inspection available upon request.

Comparison with other gear types

Gear Type Core Difference vs Spur Gear Typical Application
Helical Gear Smoother & quieter, carries axial force, needs thrust bearing High speed, heavy load mining & paper machines
Bevel Gear For intersecting shafts (90° drive), not parallel shafts Right-angle power transfer
Worm Gear Big reduction ratio, self-locking option, low efficiency Positioning, slow lifting equipment

FAQ

Q: Spur gear vs helical gear, what is the main difference?
A: Compare to helical gear, spur gear has straight teeth with no axial force, but runs noisier under high speed.
Q: Can spur gear work for high-speed heavy-duty service?
A: It is not the first choice. Compare to helical gear, spur gear meshes all at once and tends to create vibration and noise at high RPM.
